Happy food

November 28, 2006

I was in a shopping centre in Silom - the main business/hooker/gay area of town - recently when I came across (figuratively speaking, of course) this wonderful little thing outside a seafood noodle restaurant. I don’t think it’s going too far to say that those little guys, especially the crab, look waaaaaaay too happy to be food!

I agree. In Buenos Aires, the full sized stuffed bulls outside the steakhouses at least sport a wry expression. They’re not gleefully becoming your dinner. Dr Nostrum

Well, other cultures certainly are weird when it comes to food (see recent chicken ass controversy)! I’d like to say wrong, but that might be construed as being a bit racist.

In Korea, in one BBQ pork restaurant, they used to have pictures of live piglets playing together. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, I like to think that one was saying something like:

“Look at these little guys, look how cute they are. That one right there - isn’t he adorable? You’re going to eat him.”

I remember a place in Sinchon called “Sexy Pig” and had sexy cartoons pigs cavorting on a grill on the sign. We took pictures of it every time we walked past because it never stops being funny! Sexy pigs, good lord.
